Conference 2007
A Palliative Care Conference was held on Saturday 12th May to enable discussion of some of the key issues surrounding local end of life care.

Professor Karol Sikora, advisor and former head of the World Health Organisation’s cancer programme was the keynote speaker at a Palliative Care Conference held at Bournemouth University in May. Speaking from a local perspective were Dr Kirkham (Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Forest Holme, Poole NHS Trust ), Robert Talbot (Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Poole NHS Trust) and CEO of Lewis-Manning Hospice, Elizabeth Purcell.

Professor Sikora delivered an informative and engaging speech on the future of cancer care. He stressed the importance of the role palliative care will play as the treatment for cancer advances and allows more people to live longer with their illness. The remaining speakers focussed on the issues that may be faced locally in trying to widen access to palliative care and how voluntary and statutory bodies may work together.
The conference was facilitated by Lewis-Manning Hospice and aimed to allow anyone from within the field to come together and consider the issues surrounding the future of local palliative care.
