Conference 2009
Health professionals debate the future of end of life care.
Health and social care professionals from the public, private and voluntary sectors came together for an End of Life Care Conference at Bournemouth University.
The Dorset wide event was chaired by Robert Talbot, Medical Director of Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This was the third annual End of Life Care conference organised by Lewis-Manning Hospice. The agenda focused on the key factors of patient choice, collaboration between all providers of care and the issue of competition between sectors.
The conference began with a talk from a service user to give delegates a patient’s perspective on their palliative care and the issues that matter to them.
Speakers included Di Halliwell, Associate Director of Education for Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Jane Lloyd the Trust’s Chaplain, Dr Stephen Kirkham, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Forest Holme and David Cruttenden-Wood, Research Registrar at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The issues and challenges that come from patient choice were debated amongst the delegates.
Elizabeth Purcell, Chief Executive, Lewis-Manning Hospice said,
“We are delighted that the conference was well attended. This annual event has proved to provide a valuable forum for current issues in palliative and end of life care at a local and national level to be discussed. The willingness of professionals from across the healthcare sectors to share their research, concerns and experiences shows a positive step towards working together for the benefit of patients and their carers.”
